“Daniela di Serafino”
International Doctoral Award - 2025 (first edition)
Doctoral Dissertation Award Winner and Honorable Mentions

The prize is named in memory of Professor Daniela di Serafino, who died prematurely in August 2022. She was a Professor in Numerical Analysis, first at the Department of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Campania ‘L. Vanvitelli’ and later at the Department of Mathematics and Applications of the University of Naples Federico II. This prize is intended to commemorate the commitment and passion lavished by D.d.S. in her tireless research and teaching activities, and in particular her attention and dedication to young researchers.
The initiative intends to award doctoral theses developed in the field of numerical analysis, with a particular focus (but not exclusively) on optimisation and numerical linear algebra. It is intended to reward work in which significant theoretical and/or computational contributions are highlighted, with the design, implementation and use of innovative algorithms and techniques. Great attention will also be given to the applicative aspects of the works submitted. The initiative is open to scholars who have completed their doctoral degree (Ph.D) in the years 2024-2025.
Candidates must submit (by 31 July 2025), their application by entering their thesis in the appropriate form, with a cover letter, any additional material and 2 letters of recommendation (Submission Form)
The initiative is proposed and supported by the Department of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Campania “L.Vanvitelli”, the Department of Mathematics and Applications “R. Caccioppoli” of the University of Naples Federico II, the Department of Mathematics of the University of Salerno, the Department of Physical, Computer and Mathematical Sciences - University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and is sponsored by the GNCS (National Group for Scientific Computing of the National Institute of High Mathematics). The winner, who will be paid a cash prize of 2,500 euros, will be announced by November 2025, and invited to give a seminar at the University of Campania “L.Vanvitelli” and (possibly) as part of the annual meeting of the sponsoring association. In addition to the winner, a shortlist of outstanding theses will be selected and awarded a certificate of recognition.
